The goalkeeper was in superb form for Steve Bruce’s side last season, but started the 2018/19 campaign in the colours of West Bromwich Albion after his loan spell from Manchester United came to an end.
Fortunately, however, it seems that Villa are at least on the verge of signing a player to take his place in the starting XI.
The Daily Star broke the news on Friday that Villa were interested in signing Norway international Orjan Nyland from German second tier outfit FC Ingolstadt. And latest reports from the Express and Star on Monday suggest that the deal could be imminent.
It is claimed that Bruce’s side held talks with the 27-year-old over the weekend. And Nyland could be confirmed as a Villa player by the end of the day, although he is unlikely to feature in their Championship opener against Hull City this evening.
Nyland has made 27 appearances for Norway but will arrive in English football as something of an unknown quantity, although he did make a number of Bundesliga appearances for Ingolstadt between 2015 and 2017.
He is expected to be Villa’s new number one, with Bruce seeing Atletico Madrid loanee Andre Moreira as one for the future.
