Vanessa Brown Calder from the CATO Institute Takes on The Apparent Rising Popularity of Socialism.

Support for so-called ‘Democratic Socialism’ is on the rise – especially among young people, but is it really all it’s cracked up to be?

WIBC host Tony Katz spoke with Vanessa Brown Calder of the CATO Institute Monday about an article she wrote on the topic for The Federalist.

Calder told Tony that while socialists often cite Finland and Sweden as examples for successful socialism, they’re not truly ‘socialist’ in the traditional sense.

“They are better described as social democracies, and the reason that matters is because their economies there are quite free and not under the control of a central planner or central government agency. And so as a result, their economies are quite strong and better able to handle the high taxation and redistribution. In fact, the economies in many of these countries are MORE free in many aspects than the U.S. economy.”
