I read in The Journal Times that President Trump called African countries “s—hole countries” and compared them unfavorably with Norway. This may be justified by Norway’s higher level of economic development but it does not hold when you compare the countries’ national characters.
The blacks of South Africa were determined to be free and in charge of their own country. Or they came, armed only with slingshots against the white apartheid regimes guns and tanks. Finally, they won their freedom. Today, South Africa is part of a “second tier” of countries that are below the west in terms of economic development but are not poverty-stricken. (The other countries are Brazil, Russia, China and India).
Norwegians, on the other hand, have little to be proud of. They surrendered to the Germans during World War II without firing a shot. They offered plenty of recruits for Hitler’s Waffen SS. Today, Norway’s extreme cow-towing to Germany is a lot like chattel slavery.
Perhaps President Trump should be more careful when making judgments about the relative work of different countries.
