Each year, Virginia Beach staff erects holiday trees in the lobby of City Hall.
City Clerk Chief Deputy Amanda Barnes has made the ornaments and decorates the city’s centerpiece tree, while representatives of the Virginia Beach’s six sister cities volunteer their time to decorate their respective trees representing: Moss, Norway; Miyazaki City, Japan; Ards and North Down, Northern Ireland; San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua; Olongapo City, Philippines; and, Waiblingen, Germany.
The ornaments on the sister city trees have been made by students in the sisters cities and in local schools twinned with those cities.
City Clerk Ruth Fraser has been the coordinator for the Mayor’s Sister City Commission since 2005. Although she is retiring after 39 years as clerk, she will continue her leadership role in the Virginia Beach Sister Cities Association.
“I am so proud to have served the citizens of Virginia Beach through the governing body,” she said in a press release when announcing her retirement earlier this year, “and I treasure the international friendships I have formed.”
